Recreation and Sport Leadership

Series: BB4I: Transgender Inclusion and Belonging e-Learning

Beyond Barriers 4 Inclusion Online Training

Why This Matters in Recreation & Leisure

Recreation and sport programs are often where people first experience belonging — or exclusion.

From summer camps and community centres to fitness classes and youth programs, Recreation & Leisure professionals shape environments where participants learn, play, connect, and grow.

The language you use, the assumptions you avoid, and the systems you design directly impact who feels safe, seen, and able to participate fully.

As communities become more diverse, inclusive communication and gender-affirming practice are no longer “nice to have” skills — they are essential professional competencies.

This series equips you with practical tools, inclusive language, and confidence-building strategies to create programs that welcome everyone, reduce harm, and strengthen trust — while enhancing your employability, leadership readiness, and impact across the sector.

The SGF Difference

“Diversity is something you ask for. Inclusion is something you offer.
As a business owner, when you hire diversely, you’re just asking people to show up. You aren’t really doing anything.
Inclusion, on the other hand, is making a space that is truly welcoming, so people show up without being asked.”
